The mobile browser market is not at the levels of competitiveness of desktop browsers, however there is a growing market and at the moment it is fairly open. Yes, Google Chrome is consistent on Android but even so the browser has failed to become a massive hit like it is on desktop. Without no Internet Explorer or Firefox to mess things up, Opera has become one of the more popular mobile browsers.
Opera has now launched a new iPad specific browser in the form of Coast, and it is the company’s clearest
attempt to become the dominant mobile browser. The website launches to a design that is very fitting for a tablet and is in keeping with post PC trends, so expect to see a tiled interface. These tiles are not just for shows as they will actually store your favourite websites, making your most visited sites just one touch away.
In fact much of what Coast offers is about doing things with ease while taking advantage of the iPad’s touchscreen. Gestures and swipes are the order of the day and standard (unlike other browsers where they are optional), so for example history is displayed in tiles and can be swiped up to delete. Coast is available now for the iPad and iPad Mini, while there is no news yet on when other platforms will be getting the new browser, if at all.
