I'm one of those who loves using smartphone for hotspot or tethering on PC. Some months ago, I noticed that whenever am using my phone as internet connection for my laptop, it often consumes large amount of data from my monthly plan. So I started looking for a way to prevent this. I dedicated my time to search the web for solutions but to no avail, so I decided to handle it myself.
I know many people are out there experiencing this same problem but probably don't know what to do, and that is the reason why I'm sharing this tutorial. In this post I will be explaining how your smartphone consume your data when you're using it as internet connection for your laptop and how you can prevent it from doing so.
Android devices is built to run background apps even when you're no longer using the app(s). Apps like Bbm, Whatsapp, instagram and others usually run in the background of your device immediately you switched on your internet connection. This apps run in the background to keep you updated on latest activities in the social app and this is not for free, it uses internet data. For example: Instagram will notify you whenever someone Like your post or mention your name in either a post or comment.
How can you prevent background Data on your device?
You can prevent it by restricting background data of your device. To do this, switch off your data connection. Goto settings and click on 'Data Usage' - here you will find the statistics of the data you've already used.
If you are using a dual sim phone, choose the network you will like to restrict the background process. Touch the menu button on your device, mark the box at the front of 'Restrict Background Data'. Touch the home button to return to home screen.
Now, switch on your data connection and connect your device to your PC either by Tethering or by using Hotspot.
From now on, your smartphone will consume less data. That's all
